Our go to place is the White Mountains in New Hampshire especially in the winter. Living in New England has its challenges with winterizing the van but we have made it work.
We have not settled on a favorite spot to camp just yet. We have spent some time during late fall 2024 at Barnes Field located within the White Mountain National Forest. We enjoyed the peaceful setting and we were still happy to see other people camping there as well. In the off season this group camping area is first come, first served. We found a spot, put a nightly fee in the iron ranger, and set up camp.
We returned to this place in the early spring 2025 and we were lucky we saw the mud before we pulled all the way in to one of the few open unoccupied sites. What’s great is that the road is paved and plowed in the winter. Each group camping spot has a strip of pavement at the top part of the pull in. There is enough space for us to park on the pavement and not worry about getting stuck in the mud.
We are preparing to check it out during the season for some hiking but all I can think about are those crisp fall days when fewer people are camping in the great outdoors and a campfire is not just necessary for cooking but for warmth as well.
