Day 3: Sports Cathedrals

It’s not all wine and outdoor dinners in the van. Wherever we go, Bruce is scoping out if there is a cathedral of sports to visit or even better attend a sporting event. Bruce has explained to me that not all ball parks or stadiums are cathedrals. There is some code I am still trying to figure out. That said, I am always game for a game or a tour.

We were passing through Indianapolis for a quick overnight at a Marriott. It gave us just enough time for a couple farm-to-table midwestern meals and a tour at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway which I found out qualifies as a Sports Cathedral.

My favorite moment was before we even bought our tickets. When we entered at Gate 2 there was a gentleman who guided us to an out-of-the-way spot for the van. As we walked in, he had time to get in a car and intercept us before we entered the building. He asked us where we were from. We asked him where he was from. He has lived in Indianapolis all 76 years of his life. He called himself a track brat having grown up watching his dad working on Indy 500 cars since he was 3 years old. And here he was today still at the track giving us directions on where to park and what to make sure we see at the museum.

We chose the 30-minute Victory Podium Tour. We also wandered the museum which houses over 30 Indianapolis-500-winning cars including the inaugural 1911 Marmon “wasp” (pictured). Each car had a driver and a story on a plaque. I’m glad Bruce did not want to read all of them or we never would have made it to our next stop in daylight.
