Addison’s Adventures

For so many of us who strive to live life to the fullest with Addison’s Disease, we are in a constant balance. People with Addison’s Disease do not make hormones that help the body respond to stress. Stress can be subjective. Each one of us experiences the world differently. There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to replacement hormones for Addison’s Disease. We have to weigh science and medical advice.  Sometimes it helps to consider the experiences of others who have the same condition.

  • This Was My First Rodeo

    This Was My First Rodeo

While having dinner at Cody Steakhouse our waitress said, “Make sure you get a seat in the Buzzard Roost when you go to the rodeo. You’ll see all the animals and action.” We arrived early and walked around trying to remember where we were supposed to go. We were surrounded by people in Western hats.… Keep reading

  • Hot Van Life

    Hot Van Life

I have lived life to the fullest with Addison’s Disease. I have run marathons, completed half Ironman distance races, and countless other triathlon and run races. I have traveled solo in France for a month. I have skied faster than I should. So when van life called, I answered yes without hesitation.  I never knew… Keep reading

  • A Grizzly’s Been Beddin’ Down

    A Grizzly’s Been Beddin’ Down

After checking out all the first-come first-served campgrounds in the Shoshone National Forest in Wyoming, we were excited to snag a spot underneath giant cliffs. I could hear the sound of moving water just behind the site. I imagined taking a walk down to the river after setting up camp. We could have a nice… Keep reading

  • Flip-Flops

    Flip-Flops

We were looking for a place to buy flip flops because the Belle Fourche Reservoir in South Dakota took ours. The reservoir campground was supposed to provide us with a place to work and rest for the week. When we arrived we were on day four of 100-plus degree weather. We needed to cool off… Keep reading

  • Before the Smoke

    Before the Smoke

We arrived 24 hours ahead of the wildfire smoke. Madison greeted us with blue skies and oppressive heat. We first noticed the unfamiliar landscape of freshwater marshes and prairie hills. As we drove into our municipal campground, we saw bikes everywhere—leaning on campground tables and stacked on racks behind campers.  Even during the hottest day… Keep reading

  • Magnets

    Magnets

The first thing we did when we got on the road was talk to my mom. She was excited that we left two days early. She said for what felt like the millionth time how proud she was of the adventure we were about to have. Over the years we waved goodbye many times from… Keep reading

  • Campground Intervals

    Campground Intervals

My oldest daughter tried to convince us to get to the Pacific Northwest in time for a late summer trail half marathon, with 2,000 feet of elevation gain. Since I have not been fully engaged with running for quite some time, she had a lot of persuading to do.  The reason I considered it is… Keep reading

  • Fourth of July Floats

    Fourth of July Floats

My sister’s favorite holiday is the Fourth of July in Warren, Vermont. So much so that we even flew our parents in from Florida to celebrate. When we all arrived at her place the evening before, she announced that we had to be up early to get over to Main Street and secure our viewing location.… Keep reading

  • White Plates

    White Plates

As I stood awkwardly alone at my niece’s graduation, everyone around me was greeting each other by name and excited about the beginning of summer. I felt like an outsider from Massachusetts, a stranger with “white plates.” Then someone came up to me and asked “Are you the one staying in the van in the… Keep reading

  • Burgers, Bison, and Badlands

    Burgers, Bison, and Badlands

I held the elevator door for a couple who wheeled their suitcases in behind them. It was early but I still had the social energy to exclaim, “Where are you two off to?” They said “home” with relief. I became curious and asked, “Where is home?” They stood taller and said, “Sioux Falls, South Dakota.”… Keep reading
